late summer

086 112 - Copyamerican apparel tank, zara skirt (similar options here, here, here) and heels (similar here), DIY clutch

I was just cleaning out old files on my computer and came across these pictures I took back in August. For those of you who gave me advice on whether I should keep this skirt or not, thank you!  I ended up keeping it, as you can see, and it was a great staple for my summer wardrobe. In these photos I styled it with a simple tank and heels for one of those evenings when I didn’t feel like trying very hard. Now I have to figure out how to make it work into fall too (I’m thinking of wearing it with pointed pumps and a cashmere sweater), but first I need somewhere to wear it!

I didn’t expect this skirt to have a bubble hem, and I originally planned to return it because of that one reason.  But the pleating and shimmery patterned fabric convinced me to overlook the weird shape of the skirt.  And normally I’d balance such a short hemline with a long sleeved top, but it’s 95 degrees out here and I’m not completely insane.

fluro trim

american apparel sweatshirt, laugh cry repeat shorts, vintage necklaces, asos clutch (similar here and here), bauble bar neon bracelet (similar here, here, here), h&m yellow link bracelet and hinge ring, sam edelman yelena sandals

A smaller dose of neon today against some nice neutral shades.  As much as I hate buying shorts (see this post), I fell in love with these awesome neon trim ones from Laugh Cry Repeat.  They have a nice high-ish waist with a good amount of room in the legs (I went up a size to ensure a looser fit), a formula that proves most flattering for bigger thighs.  Honestly, I don’t know why all shorts aren’t made like these, it gets so frustrating shopping for shorts when all that are offered are low-cut, booty-cheek-displaying hotpants that look good on approximately .0082% of the population.  Yes?

neon pink

forever 21 sweater (similar here) and hinged ring (love this one too), american apparel shorts and neon yellow nail lacquer, vintage clutch and sunglasses, asos watch (similar here) and spike bracelet, bauble bar neon cord bracelet, urban outfitters tiger bracelet, forever 21 neon stone bracelet (more cool neon wristwear here, here, and here), betsey johnson ziah booties

I’m finally embracing the upcoming summer season by incorporating little bits of neon into my accessories and nail polish.  This time I decided to dive in head first with this pink sweater.  I like the way it turned out; the neon looks really sharp against the light wash shorts (the same ones I obsessed over here) and the black accessories.  I like to think I pulled it off without looking like a college freshman at a dubstep concert…

Happy Friday!

a lesson in proportion

h&m blouse and yellow link bracelet, asos collar tips and clutch, naven skirt, bauble bar neon cord bracelet, urban outfitters tiger bangle, forever 21 bar ring, vintage heels, american apparel nail lacquer in neon yellow

I talked myself into buying this Naven skirt because 1, it’s my favorite color 2, it’s silk, and 3, it has an exposed zipper (someday I’ll have to count the number of things I own solely based on their having exposed zippers – it’s always a selling point for me).  But when my new skirt finally arrived in the mail, I was less than enthusiastic about actually wearing it.  While the bubble silhouette looked great on the 5’11”, size 0 model, I didn’t find it nearly as flattering on my pear-shaped figure.  But as I learned, it’s all a matter of proportion.

At first I tried pairing the skirt with a simple tank and platform pumps, hoping to highlight my slender upper body and lengthen my legs, but the lack of volume on top only exaggerated my dewdrop shape, and the thick heels + miniskirt combo looked a little Las-Vegas-in-a-bad-way.  So I switched to a t-shirt and a pair of sandals, but the ankle straps on the shoes made my legs appear chunky, visibly adding weight to my lower body.  Finally, I decided on a billowy-but-sheer blouse, buttoned all the way up and sporting collar tips, which added enough volume to balance out the extra padding the skirt creates around my hips.  As a finishing touch I put on low heels with a pointed toe to lengthen my legs while avoiding looking like a cheese puff.
